What can I do? How can I make a difference?

The question is not whether each individual can make a difference, because every decision we make in our daily interactions makes a difference - to the earth, to the community around us.  The question is what kind of difference do we want to make?  The challenge of the stewardship of creation is to put into action those practices that we know to be right - recycle, carpool, make your home more energy efficient, avoid drive-thrus, raise the thermostat in the summer and lower it in the winter…the list goes on.

The above list just addresses ways to combat environmental degradation.  The Anglican World Congress expands the stewardship of creation to include much broader issues, recognizing the interrelatedness of all things and understanding that “humanity is a part of the created order, not separate from it.”  This approach leads us to consider broader issues such as poverty, women’s rights and egregious over-consumption from a global perspective. We can’t separate ourselves from the environment - it impacts every aspect of life - health, work, leisure.  We can all make a difference when we make informed decisions with the attitude that we will be good stewards of God’s creation.

Our goal is not to amass information or to satisfy curiosity, but rather to become painfully aware, to dare to turn what is happening to the world into our own personal suffering and thus to discover what each of us can do about it.
